When it comes to worktop materials, there are a few you can choose from, and they all have their own positive and negative points.

 

  • Real wood

 

Real wood tops go hand in hand with traditional, country style kitchens. If you do choose this style of worktop, it's worth remembering that they're not the most durable or water resistant choice. The tops need to be sealed and oiled regularly in order to keep them looking as good as possible.

 

  • Hard stone

 

If you're looking to add a touch of luxury, then a marble or granite worktop could be the one for you. They are hard wearing to an extent, but the top layer can be scratched, so it's advised to always put down a chopping board in order to protect the worktop. They're also an incredibly porous material which means they need to be treated and sealed professionally before being installed.

 

  • Laminated wood

 

This is the most common style of kitchen worktop. They come in a range of colours, finishes and designs which means they'll suit practically any style of kitchen. They're hard wearing, easy to clean and there's very little maintenance. They can be damaged by heat, so it's never advised to place hot pans straight onto the worktop itself.
